Day 28
Wednesday 31 August 2005 The last day's run! All were able to have a lie in before the final short run into Cape Town to the V & A Waterfront. Today's first stop was the lovely old town of Tulbagh, to have a look at its beautiful colonial buildings before heading up the Bain's Kloof Pass into the pleasant town of Wellington. The Bain's Kloof Pass was reminiscent of an Alpine Rally road of the 1960s, especially as the ascent saw vehicles rise into an Alpine fog as the road twisted in and out of fascinating rock formations. The views and scenery on the last day were magnificent, giving us something to definitely remember. In particular, the view of Cape Town, with Table Mountain, Signal Hill and the Lion's Head looming above it, was captivating and a superb view to round the trip off. As vehicles crossed the finishing line, participants supped champagne, chatted merrily and danced on the roof of the De Hullu Defender. With spirits jubilant, everyone enjoyed a few drinks before dolling up and heading to Boschendal for the final meal of the event. Fittingly, the meal was a buffet - but what a buffet! The food and accompanying wine were excellent and everyone shook a leg to Audrey Russell's music before dozing off on the coach for the journey home - although some participants could be seen in the hotel bar and corridors until the wee-est hours. A joyous end to a joyous event. Bring on China!
