Day 25

Sunday 28 August 2005
Nest Hotel, Luderitz - Canyon Hotel, Keetmanshoop

There were two highlights on the route today, but first stop was a quick detour to the Cross at Diaz Point for some refreshing Atlantic air after the desert.

The first highlight, however, was the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop. This was an early 20th century diamond mining town, which was abandoned and is now overrun by the desert. We were fortunate enough to be given a fascinating guided tour by a German lady whose grandparents once lived in the once thriving community.

The route then took us to Aus, a characterful little town complete with a period hotel. Before this some took a very quick detour to a waterhole near the town to see some Garub wild horses. These are a feral herd descended from escaped animals but now biologically adapted to desert survival.

On leaving Aus, the roads took us past the site of a World War 1 prisoner of war camp and some Commonwealth War Graves of German, British and South African Soldiers.

After another 170km of high speed asphalt, we turned off the B4 for 120km of good gravel to the site of our second highlight - the Fish River Canyon. This was truly an amazing sight, especially in the low, late afternoon sun. Some participants decided to stay and watch the sunset before returning to the B4 for a short run to Keetmanshoop for our overnight halt and Anne Collards birthday celebrations.
