Day 1

Thursday 4 August 2005

Table Bay Hotel, Cape Town - Western Cape Hotel, Kleinmond

Under a blue, cloudless, sky with the Table Mountain as our backdrop, crews were flagged off from the Waterfront in Cape Town at the start of the African Adventure 2005.

It was a gentle start to our 28 day marathon, on mainly asphalt roads taking in the spectacular coastal scenery of the Cape Peninsula, the green mountains and elegant colonial architecture of the Cape region.

Although the real highlight for some, on our visit to Cape of Good Hope should have been the meeting of the two ocean, the wonderful views or the loan ostrich striding along the sea shore, but what really brought a smile to the faces of our male Adventurers was a visit to the gents toilet which boasted a visitors book! Most comments are, unfortunately, unprintable but moving moments certainly stimulated some colourful words.

We had a wonderful drive in the afternoon through the lush Cape winery and the early Dutch settlement town of Stellenbosch. Leaving Stellenbosch we climbed the mountain road to Franshoek where we met a family of baboons, watched over by a large dominant male. Apparently the Crouchers also paused here and Dee Anne attempted to put together a deal, one large baboon in exchange for Kenny. The baboons, however, didn't consider this a fair swap much to Dee Anne's disappointment.

At The Theewaterskloof Dam we turned onto quiet, smooth gravel road, across farming country, giving us chance to familiarise ourselves with the surface before we enter more extreme examples on the safaris.

The day ended at the Western Cape hotel where some crews who arrived early took advantage of the hotel facilities, some even fit in a brisk 9 holes before nightfall descended on the first day.
