Day 17 - SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS - PALENQUE

After an eventful night with car alarms going off, late pub crawlers seeking shelter in the early hours of the morning (you know who you are..) and local craftsman commencing with their daily routines it did not result in the long AWAITED lie-in.
I was thrilled that this day would have no gravel therefore no sports bra necessary but after all the topes, vibrators, rampa, reducciones, call them what you like, one would have been necessary. After a light breakfast we went to explore the Zocalo (town square) which was already crowded with tourists admiring the adjacent cathedral that dates back to the 16th century.
On our way to the ''Cascadas De Agua Azul'' we traveled on twisty mountain roads with lush meadows which were reminiscent of the Eastern Transvaal area back home. On arrival we were positively surprised by it's beautiful surroundings and truly turquoise waters. We followed the path up to the mirador, which didn't reveal the best views. In our opinion the view of the waterfall from the bottom was more spectacular. There was a multitude of restaurants and souvenir stalls and we were tempted to have empanadas.
Just a little further down the road we visited the Misol-Ha Waterfall, which allowed us the opportunity to follow a path behind the main fall and this made for fantastic photo shots.
Then we made our way to the ''Palenque Ruins'' (by-passing our Hotel Chan-Kah) made famous by the Maya; the area comprises 100's of buildings which are spread over some 15 Sq Km. Lynn, Eric and Ines climbed to the top and observed the beautiful peaceful surroundings while Rolf thought they looked better from the bottom.
The day was rounded off with a Thanks Giving Dinner where turkey of a special kind was served, this led Jim Taylor to invite all participants to visit him in Colorado for a REAL Thanks Giving meal.
